A heat pump is a mechanical-compression cycle refrigeration system that can be reversed to either heat or cool a controlled space. Just like any other mini split heat pump, the Trane mini split pump have two main components: an outdoor compressor and an indoor air-handling unit. A conduit, which houses the power cable, suction tubing, refrigerant tubing and a condensate drain, links the outdoor and indoor units. The Main power is supplied to the outdoor unit.

The potential for geothermal energy in Canada is immense; it is estimated to be well over 5,000 MW by CanGEA, in shallow depth geothermal resources with currently available technology and technology that can be easily transferred from the Oil & Gas, Mining Canadian industries that are already in place.

The Geothermal energy originates from the heat retained within the Earth. Most high temperature geothermal heat is harvested in regions close to tectonic plate boundaries (e.g. Canada) where volcanic activity rises close to the surface of the Earth. In these areas, ground and groundwater can be found with temperatures higher than the target temperature of the application. But even cold ground contains heat and it may be extracted with a heat pump (Ground

Source Heat Pump).

In regions without any high temperature geothermal resources, a (GSHP) can provide space heating and space cooling. Like a refrigerator or air conditioner, these systems use a heat pump to force the transfer of heat from the ground to the building. Heat can be extracted from any source, no matter how cold, but a warmer source allows higher efficiency. A ground-source heat pump uses the shallow ground or ground water.

GSHP merely accesses stored solar heat energy in the soil or rock.

GSHPs circulate a carrier fluid through closed pipe loops buried in the ground. As the fluid circulates underground it absorbs heat from the ground and, on its return, the warmed fluid passes through the heat pump which uses electricity to extract heat from the fluid. The re-chilled fluid is sent back into the ground thus continuing the cycle. The heat extracted and that generated by the heat pump appliance as a byproduct is used to heat the house. The addition of the ground heating loop in the energy equation means that significantly more heat can be transferred to a building than if electricity alone had been used directly for heating.

A heat pump is a device that delivers heat energy from a given source of heat to a destination. Heat pumps are designed to move thermal energy opposite to the direction of natural heat flow by absorbing heat from a cold space and releasing it to a warmer place. The air conditioners are familiar examples of heat pumps. However the term heat pump is broader and applies to many HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) devices used for space heating and space cooling. When a heat pump is used for heating, it employs the same basic refrigeration-type cycle used by an air conditioner or a refrigerator, but in the opposite direction – releasing heat into the conditioned space rather than the surrounding environment. In this use, heat pumps generally draw heat from the cooler external air or from the ground. In heating mode, heat pumps are three to four times more efficient in their use of electric power, than are simple electrical resistance heaters.
